Greggs Roll Trilogy: Sausage vs Vegan vs Chicken Roll
Greggs has officially got a “trilogy” now — Sausage Roll, Vegan Roll and, as of this April, the new Chicken Roll. I’ve eaten my way through all three so you don’t have to guess: here’s exactly how they stack up on price, calories and what you’re actually getting for your money.

📖 How we got here
Meet the Trilogy
Greggs itself calls this its “iconic roll trilogy” — three permanent, pastry-wrapped rolls that now sit side by side on the shelf. Here’s the story of how each one arrived.
The Sausage Roll — the one that started it all
Nobody really knows exactly when it first appeared, but the classic Sausage Roll has been Greggs’ undisputed number one for decades, reportedly selling well over a million a day across the UK in 2026. Seasoned pork sausagemeat, golden puff pastry, no faff. This is the benchmark every other roll gets measured against.
January 2019 — the Vegan Roll arrives
Launched for Veganuary, this one properly went viral. Queues formed outside shops, it sparked a very public spat with Piers Morgan on social media, and it ended up being one of the most talked-about food launches of the decade. A Quorn™ mycoprotein filling wrapped in the same flaky pastry, made to look near-identical to the original.
April 2026 — the Chicken Roll completes the set
Greggs marked the launch with a pop-up preview event in Soho and cheeky campaign lines calling it the trilogy’s “headline act.” Seasoned chicken wrapped in glazed puff pastry, it landed nationwide on 9 April 2026 at £1.35 — and reaction online was, let’s say, mixed (“a sausage roll is not a sausage roll without sausage,” as one commenter put it).
A Greggs spokesperson described the launch as completing an “iconic roll trilogy” — cheeky marketing, but it does actually make sense once you line the three up side by side, which is exactly what we’re about to do.

🔥 The numbers that matter most
Calories Compared
This is genuinely the closest race of the three — and it might surprise you which one comes out lightest.
Calories per roll, based on official Greggs figures reported at launch and current nutritional data.
The Vegan Roll actually edges it as the lightest of the three at 302 kcal, with the new Chicken Roll close behind at 305 kcal — both come in a good 43-46 kcal under the classic Sausage Roll’s 348 kcal. For context, the NHS’s guidance on daily calorie intake puts the average reference intake at around 2,000 kcal for women and 2,500 kcal for men — so even the Sausage Roll only accounts for roughly a sixth to a seventh of a full day’s calories on its own.
Fancy going even lighter? Our Greggs Items Under 300 Calories guide and Items Under 400 Calories roundup both cover exactly where each of these three rolls lands alongside the rest of the menu, and our full menu calorie guide has every other item too.
Fancying something even higher in protein? Chicken is naturally protein-dense, and the Chicken Roll’s launch has already got people asking where it fits — have a look at our High Protein Options at Greggs guide for the full picture.
💷 Standard, City/London or Airport?
Price by Store Type
Greggs runs a three-tier pricing system, and it applies to all three rolls. Here’s what that actually means for your wallet.
City/London and airport figures for the Vegan and Chicken Roll are estimated using Greggs’ typical tiered mark-up, since not every location has published exact pricing yet. Always check in-app or in-store for your local price.
Here’s a genuinely interesting one: the brand-new Chicken Roll actually launched cheaper than the Vegan Roll — 5p less at standard stores. Given how much extra press the Chicken Roll got on launch, that surprised a fair few people, us included. If you want the full picture on why prices jump so much at city and travel locations, we’ve broken it down properly in Greggs London Prices vs Rest of the UK and Why Is Greggs More Expensive at Airports?
🔍 Behind the pastry
What’s Actually Inside Each One
Same flaky exterior, three genuinely different fillings — and a few allergen differences worth knowing before you order.
Sausage Roll: seasoned pork sausagemeat wrapped in Greggs’ classic puff pastry. Contains wheat (gluten), and Greggs flags a cross-contamination risk with soya and milk from the shared bakery environment — worth knowing if you’re avoiding dairy strictly rather than just by preference.
Vegan Roll: a bespoke Quorn™ mycoprotein filling, built to mimic the texture of the original as closely as possible. It’s free from meat, dairy and egg by recipe, though it’s baked in the same shared ovens as everything else, so cross-contamination can’t be fully ruled out if you have a severe allergy rather than a dietary preference. Contains wheat and barley (gluten).
Chicken Roll: seasoned chicken in a lightly glazed puff pastry — that glaze is actually the main visual giveaway between this and the Sausage Roll if you’re grabbing one in a hurry. As the newest of the three, its full independent allergen and macro breakdown is still catching up across the web, so always check the in-store allergen guide or the Greggs app directly before ordering if you have a specific allergy.
For the full official allergen picture across the whole menu — not just these three — our Bakery Allergy Information guide is the one to check before you order.
Fancy having a go yourself? We’ve got copycat recipes for two of the three: how to make the Sausage Roll at home and how to make the Vegan Roll at home. We’ll be building a Chicken Roll version once we’ve had a proper go at cracking that glaze.
🏆 The actual verdict
Which One Should You Actually Buy?
Honestly, there’s no single winner — it depends what you’re actually after. Here’s how I’d choose.
Cheapest option
The classic Sausage Roll still wins on price at £1.30 standard, and it’s the one most stores can make fastest.
Sausage RollLowest calorie
The Vegan Roll pips it by a whisker at 302 kcal, plus it’s the only one that works for vegans and vegetarians.
Vegan RollSomething different
If you’ve had the other two a hundred times, the Chicken Roll is genuinely a different eating experience thanks to that glazed pastry.
Chicken RollClassic comfort
Nothing beats the original if you just want the taste you grew up with — this is still the UK’s best-selling bakery snack for a reason.
Sausage RollMy honest take: the Sausage Roll remains the benchmark, the Vegan Roll is genuinely worth it even if you’re not vegan (that calorie saving adds up), and the Chicken Roll is a solid, slightly lighter alternative that’s worth trying at least once — the glaze on the pastry alone makes it worth the 5p premium over the classic.
