How Much Caffeine Is in a Greggs Coffee? (mg Per Drink, 2026)

By Harper Jones · Caffeine figures from Which? (August 2026), cross-checked with NHS guidance · Prices from our Greggs menu prices page

The short answer

A Greggs espresso has about 75 mg of caffeine, a flat white or latte about 150 mg (up to roughly 208 mg in a large latte), a cappuccino about 235 mg and an Americano about 257 mg. Bigger cups mean more espresso shots, so the Americano and cappuccino are the strongest drinks on the menu. For most adults the daily limit is 400 mg. If you’re pregnant, the NHS limit is 200 mg, and a single Greggs cappuccino or Americano is already over it.

Greggs lists calories, allergens and macros for every drink, but its nutrition and allergen information doesn’t include caffeine. That gap used to leave people guessing, and plenty of sites filled it with rough estimates. In August 2026 consumer group Which? compared the stated caffeine content of Greggs, Costa, Caffè Nero, Pret and Starbucks drinks, and the Greggs numbers are higher than most guesses. Here they are, drink by drink, with what they mean for your day.

How much caffeine is in each Greggs drink?

These are the Greggs drinks Which? measured, set against the two guideline limits that matter: 400 mg a day for most adults and 200 mg a day in pregnancy. The standard price is the “from” takeaway price at a typical high-street shop.

Drinks Which? didn’t test: our estimates

Mocha, iced lattes, matcha, tea and hot chocolate weren’t in the Which? comparison, and Greggs hasn’t published their caffeine. These are our estimates, built from the tested drinks and standard values for tea, cocoa and matcha. Treat them as ranges.

DrinkEstimated caffeineWhy
Mocha~150–235 mgSame espresso base as a latte or cappuccino, plus a little from the cocoa. Cup size decides where it lands.
Iced latte / Iced caramel latte~150 mgAssumes the same two-shot build as a flat white. Ice and syrup add volume and sugar, not caffeine.
Iced matcha latte (plain, vanilla, strawberry, blueberry)~30–100 mgMatcha only, no espresso. Hot matcha lattes tested at other chains held 28–99 mg.
Tea~50–75 mgThe NHS puts a mug of tea at about 75 mg; Greggs’ 10 oz cup is slightly smaller.
Green tea~25–45 mgTypical figure for a cup of green tea.
Hot chocolate~5–15 mgCocoa only, no coffee.
Peppermint tea0 mgHerbal infusion, no tea leaf.

Why Greggs drinks differ so much

Greggs makes its hot drinks on bean-to-cup machines. We cover the kit in our Behind the Counter equipment guide, including the Thermoplan Black&White4. Greggs doesn’t publish shot counts, but the numbers point one way: the 222 ml flat white (150 mg) looks like two shots at about 75 mg each, while the larger 327 ml cappuccino and 382 ml Americano (235 mg and 257 mg) look like three or more. That is our inference, not a Greggs statement.

So the rule is simple. Cup size drives caffeine, and milk, ice and syrup don’t change it. A latte and a flat white of the same size are close to identical. The Americano tops the list because it’s a large cup that is mostly espresso and water.

Why the figures are “stated”, not exact

Which? worked from the stated caffeine content, which comes from recipes and suppliers. Grind wear, bean batch, shot length and how busy a shop is all shift the real number a little, so treat any single figure as a guide of roughly ±15%.

Matcha, tea, hot chocolate and decaf

Matcha. Greggs now sells plain, vanilla, strawberry and blueberry iced matcha lattes (see our Greggs iced matcha latte guide). Matcha is powdered whole tea leaf, so it carries caffeine. Which? found hot matcha lattes at 28 mg (Pret), 57 mg (Starbucks) and 99 mg (Costa), and at Starbucks the matcha had more caffeine than the chain’s espresso shot. Greggs hasn’t published its figure, so assume a similar range of 30–100 mg. Switching from latte to matcha cuts caffeine; it doesn’t remove it.

Hot chocolate. No coffee, but cocoa still brings a few milligrams, so it isn’t strictly caffeine-free.

Christmas drinks. Greggs’ 2026 festive lineup follows the same rules. The Hazelnut Crunch Latte and Salted Caramel Latte (hot or iced) are espresso-based, so expect latte-level caffeine. The Candy Cane Mint Hot Chocolate is cocoa-based, and the Candy Cane Mint Iced Matcha Latte is matcha-based. Prices and details are in our Greggs Christmas drinks guide, and summer favourites are in the iced drinks menu.

Decaf. There is no decaf coffee on the Greggs drinks menu we track, so check in the shop or app before assuming one is available. Decaf anywhere is never truly zero: it typically holds a few milligrams per cup.

Daily limits: how many Greggs coffees is too many?

The NHS and British Heart Foundation say up to 400 mg a day is not linked to harmful effects for most healthy adults. The EFSA scientific opinion also treats single doses up to about 200 mg as safe. With Greggs, the sums work out like this:

  • One cappuccino (235 mg) plus one flat white (150 mg) is about 385 mg, nearly your whole day.
  • One Americano (257 mg) plus one flat white (150 mg) is about 407 mg, slightly over.
  • Two flat whites plus an espresso is about 375 mg.
  • Two cappuccinos, or two Americanos, put you over 400 mg on their own.

Timing matters as much as total. Caffeine’s half-life is around five hours for most adults, and varies a lot between people. A 235 mg cappuccino at 2pm leaves roughly 118 mg in your system at 7pm and about 59 mg at midnight. If sleep is the problem, move your last coffee earlier before you cut the number of coffees.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children

The key point for pregnancy

The NHS advises pregnant women to have no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day (NHS guidance on foods and drinks to avoid in pregnancy). A Greggs cappuccino (235 mg) or Americano (257 mg) is over that in one cup. A flat white (150 mg) or an espresso (75 mg) fits, but leaves little room for tea (about 75 mg a mug) or chocolate.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have a heart condition, ask your midwife, GP or pharmacist what suits you. If you want a hot drink with very little caffeine, hot chocolate or peppermint tea are the low-caffeine choices on the menu.

For children, European guidance uses about 3 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight. For a 25 kg child that is roughly 75 mg, about one Greggs espresso, so a latte or cappuccino is far too much. Hot chocolate is the better choice.

Greggs vs Costa, Caffè Nero, Pret and Starbucks

Greggs is not the lightest coffee on the high street. Which? ranked its cappuccino and Americano second-strongest of the five chains. Serving sizes differ between chains, so compare these as a guide.

Americano257 mg325 mg191 mg180 mg89 mg

Source: Which?, 25 August 2026. Pret’s espresso serving (50 ml) is about double the size of Starbucks’ (24 ml).

The takeaway: Costa is the strongest overall, Starbucks the lightest, and Greggs sits in between, closer to Costa on larger drinks. Greggs is usually the cheapest of the group, so you pay less per milligram. We compare taste and value in our Greggs vs Costa Coffee comparison.

How to cut caffeine at Greggs

  • Pick a smaller or milkier drink. A flat white or latte (about 150 mg) has roughly 100 mg less than an Americano.
  • Choose an espresso (about 75 mg) if you only want a quick hit.
  • Go for matcha, hot chocolate or peppermint tea on days you’ve already had coffee.
  • Ask about fewer shots. Which? suggests it, but Greggs’ machine-made drinks may not allow it, so don’t rely on it.
  • Stop by early afternoon so caffeine has fallen by bedtime.

Prices and savings on Greggs hot drinks

Greggs charges by shop type. Standard high-street shops cost least, city-centre and London shops charge more (roughly 11–19%), and franchise sites such as airports and motorway services charge the most (roughly 27–55%). A flat white, for example, is £2.40 at a standard shop, £2.75 in City/London and £3.10 at airports and franchises. Takeaway hot drinks carry no VAT, but eating in adds 20%. Our Greggs coffee menu prices page has every drink in all three tiers, and the price finder tool checks your local tier.

Ways to pay less per cup: a free hot or iced drink when you sign up to the Greggs app, then stamps towards free items (how the stamp system works), and 25p off hot drinks when you bring a reusable cup. O2 and Virgin Media customers can also get £1 Greggs hot drinks through the Priority app. Limits and dates change, so check the app for the current offer, and see our Greggs deals page. The Breakfast Deal (breakfast roll plus a regular hot drink) is £3.25 until 11am.

Greggs caffeine FAQs

How much caffeine is in a Greggs flat white?

About 150 mg in a 222 ml flat white, according to Which? (August 2026). That’s roughly 38% of the 400 mg adult daily limit and 75% of the 200 mg pregnancy limit.

Which Greggs drink has the most caffeine?

The Americano, at about 257 mg in a 382 ml cup, followed by the cappuccino at about 235 mg. A large latte can reach roughly 208 mg. A single espresso has about 75 mg.

How many Greggs coffees can I drink in a day?

For most adults, up to 400 mg a day is considered safe. A cappuccino plus a flat white comes to about 385 mg, so two strong drinks is the practical limit. Two Americanos or two cappuccinos exceed it.

Can I drink Greggs coffee when pregnant?

The NHS advises a maximum of 200 mg of caffeine a day in pregnancy. A Greggs cappuccino (about 235 mg) or Americano (about 257 mg) is over that in one cup. A flat white (about 150 mg) or espresso (about 75 mg) fits, but leaves little room for tea. Ask your midwife or GP if unsure.

Does Greggs publish caffeine content?

Not in its standard nutrition and allergen information. The figures in this guide come from the stated caffeine content that Which? compiled in August 2026, so treat them as guides rather than exact measurements.

Is there caffeine in Greggs matcha?

Yes. Matcha is made from tea leaf and contains caffeine. Greggs hasn’t published a figure, but hot matcha lattes at other chains hold 28–99 mg, so we estimate about 30–100 mg for a Greggs iced matcha latte.

Does Greggs sell decaf coffee?

There is no decaf coffee on the Greggs drinks menu we track. Check in the shop or app. Decaf is never completely caffeine-free, so it still isn’t a true zero.
